" Zaaaym! Hela People be posting all their business on Facebook, like it ain't public. ULTRA RACHETTE!"
This is a usual sentence I would normally say around my friends/family outside of a business setting, it has been awhile since I've been in a professional environment. Since my arrival at Year Up, I had to be more aware of how I say things, and execute my words. Having to rephrase myself, can be a job itself, caution of "Ask" "Asked" "Ask". Growing up using words and sentences such as: "Wusup bruh" "Dat was Hela mainey" "Yous a fool" "I be out here functionin' like ayyyyeee!" "It's Tre LIT out herre like!". Learning to seperate my launage and using proper grammer at Year Up, has been a learning experience but so far well worth it.
At Year Up I attend three class: Tech, Business Communications, and Pro Skills, each subject helping me to gain "Professional etiquette"during my internship. Each class has already provided me for refreshing new skills. In Tech class so far I learned about applications, different software and their uses, interface, computer terms, shortcuts. But I feel one of the most important forms of tech, I've gain from class is the use of the different uses for Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. That's just the few weeks I've been attending.
Business Communication class has taught me how to annotate, note taking while reading, proper grammar, being apart of group discussions fish bowl, taking minutes. We've read great short stories like: Mother Tongue and Going to School in East LA, I really enjoyed both. With each story granted me knowledge of diversity, with every handout and believe there has been more than a few.
Pro Skills has refreshed my memory of the unspoken rules of the professional world, such as a proper handshake, how not to describe others without a description of their race, or any personal features. How not to bring up certain topics that could be inappropriate like: politics, religion, ethnicity. It should be avoided.
I have been gaining a lot of knowledge so far since the start of Year Up, and by each day that knowledge has only been growing. I'm more and more aware of the "To and Don't" in a professional setting, with everything I've been learning. I'm striving to take full advantage of it, and use it not just in my internship but adapt to it as a daily routine. To be an example to those who are also willing to better themselves, and knowing that I'm not changing my ways. But learning to incorporate it in my habits, as a key to help myself in my future. Being at Year Up, has been a great experience so far. I only hope to gain more knowledge and experiences as the weeks progress.
